I love you too Jeremy. You write so perceptively about this music that my hearing of it is transformed before I even turn to a recording. And although for many years now my heart has melted in the tender radiance of that Bb I've never come so close to understanding why. It's a uniquely accessible musical wisdom you share with us, and one I dig deeply. Thanks - Ricky

Great post - the melody almost seems Nordic to me, especially in terms of rhythm and organic growth. Melodies like that crop up quite a bit in very early Sibelius...

Only Schumann could have written this. I risk a discussion of his music that is altogether hashed and rehashed--but it's insatiable--the chimera of "there's a man watching himself go mad." Something so deliberate and inevitable about that "melody." :)
Thank you, Mr. Denk. Now I'm going to go out and buy a recording.

i don't know enough about music to discuss this blog except that it's fine with me if a piece doesn't have a discernable melody. however, i know enough about the chopped liver syndrome. if i were with a special someone and his eyes were gazing steadily at someone else, it would be a major turnoff and i'd call it a night.

god i love you.

who else would devote so much blog space to just a few measures of music? and discuss it so well, and with such gusto?! i must read this again in the morning ..it's 12:06 am here and i want to savor this post when i'm awake :P hehehe you and that b flat. i'm geeing out over the fact that there's a double sharp!!! a double sharp!!! i mean, we talk about them enough in theory class, but to actually get to play one? woot! i want to take out my violin right now (got a new shoulder rest for christmas yay!) and play that melody (and yes, i believe it is a melody, and a bloody brilliant melody at that ... of course i'm odd and like very odd sounding things esp the modern composers embrace dissonace!) because it is so beautiful and so cool!!! gosh, thank you for putting the music on here, now i have another reason to take out my violin and play! (i'm actually a vocal performance major, but i took 5 years of violin lessons, until 8th grade) well i will come bacl tomorrow a happy christmas to you! hugs
